Group discussion: Assurance of salvation

Content thumbnail description

Initial value:

  • “Image of a page of the Bible with a salvation passage, with a text overlay of ‘am I saved?’”

Changed to:

  • “Image/clip-art/etc. of a nervous/anxious person, with a text overlay of ‘am I saved?’”

Why:

  • Thumbnails will not be able to display the detail necessary to render specific Bible passages, nor is it realistic to find images to use in such a way. So this sort of thing will never work as thumbnail backgrounds (not just in this case specifically, but ever).

Maintaining lands conquered after the First Crusade

Subject tags

Initial value:

  • stags=“Crusades > Maintaining conquered lands required effort | Zengi | Crusader States > Edessa > Strategic significance of | Crusader States > Edessa | Crusader States > Edessa > Fall of”

I removed “Crusader States > Edessa” as a tag, since we are already tagging the section with two other tags that logically fall under this broader tag:

  • Crusader States > Edessa > Strategic significance of
  • Crusader States > Edessa > Fall of

In cases like this, we do not need to actually use the broader tag too.

The launching of the Second Crusade

Subject tags

Initial value:

  • stags=“Crusades > Second Crusade > Launching of | Bernard of Clairvaux | Byzantine Empire | Byzantine Empire > Did not request military aid in the Second Crusade | Manuel I Komnenos | Pope Eugene III”

Same thing as before: I removed “Byzantine Empire” since the tag “Byzantine Empire > Did not request military aid in the Second Crusade” is already on the section.

The failed siege of Damascus in 1148

Subject tags

Initial value:

  • stags="Crusades > Second Crusade > Damascus | Crusades > Second Crusade > Damascus > Siege of | Crusades > Second Crusade > European nobles sometimes brought their luxurious lifestyles on crusade | Pope Eugene III | Louis VII | Conrad III | Nur ad-Din | Baldwin III of Jerusalem | Crusades > Second Crusade > Battle of Dorylaeum | Mu’in al-Din Unur | Crusades > Second Crusade > Council of Acre"

Same thing as before: I removed “Crusades > Second Crusade > Damascus” since the tag “Crusades > Second Crusade > Damascus > Siege of” is already on the section.

Group discussion: Baptism and the Great Commission

Content thumbnail description

Initial value:

  • “Image of the Greek preposition ’eis’, with an equals sign and the word ‘into’ on the top of the thumbnail, with a Bible page with the text of Matthew 28:19 on the lower part of the thumbnail”

Changed to:

  • “Black background with the Greek preposition ‘εἰς’ in white text on left, then an equals sign, and then the word ‘into’.”

Why:

  • Thumbnails will not be able to display the detail necessary to render specific Bible passages, nor is it realistic to find images to use in such a way. So this sort of thing will never work as thumbnail backgrounds (not just in this case specifically, but ever).

Ryan Reeves: The Third Crusade

Content thumbnail description

Initial value:

  • “Image with a representation of Richard the Lionheart on the left and a representation of Saladin on the right, with the words ‘Leaders mythologized?’, and the city of Jerusalem in the Middle ages in the background”

Changed to:

  • “Image of the ancient city of Jerusalem, with overlaid text: ‘Retake Jerusalem’.”

Why:

  • There would be no way to have enough detail to represent Richard the Lionheart and Saladin and Jerusalem all three. Thumbnails need to stay focused, rather than trying to do too much at once.
  • Since a follow-on topic will be about Richard the Lionheart and Saladin, the broader source clip video shouldn’t use them in its thumbnail.

Crusade mythologizing: Richard the Lionheart and Saladin

Subject tags

Initial value:

  • stags=“Crusades > Third Crusade > Has been highly romanticized | Richard the Lionheart | Saladin > Was negatively portrayed in contemporary accounts, but became esteemed in later Western sources”

Changed to:

  • stags=“Saladin > Was negatively portrayed in contemporary accounts, but became esteemed in later Western sources”

Why?

  • Because the parent section (Ryan Reeves: The Third Crusade) already has Subject tags of “Saladin”, “Richard the Lionheart” and “Crusades > Third Crusade > Has been highly romanticized”, then we don’t want to repeat the tags on the subsection. Remember that when we roll tags up, we take them off of the child sections.

Group discussion: The Third Crusade

Content thumbnail description

Initial value:

  • content-thumbnail-description=“Image with representations of leaders and key people of the Third Crusade, such as Richard the Lionheart, Saladin, Philip II of France, Pope Gregory VIII, and the words ‘Third Crusade’ with an equals sign ‘stalemate’”

Changed to:

  • content-thumbnail-description=“Image of Richard the Lionheart on the left, image of Saladin on the right. Over the top of both images, have the words ‘Third Crusade’ with an equals sign, and then the word ‘stalemate’.”

Why?

  • Remember that thumbnails need to stay limited to a very small number of ideas at a time, since there’s not enough room for multiple topics at once.
